Why I Love My Squiggly Career (and why you might too)

There’s a lot to be said for a traditional, straight-line career. Stability, clear progression, a roadmap laid out ahead of you. And for many, that’s the dream. But that’s not my path. My career has been anything but linear; it’s been squiggly, full of unexpected turns, challenges, and exciting new opportunities.

And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What is a Squiggly Career?

A squiggly career means saying yes to unexpected opportunities and being open to change. It means seeing career crossroads not as obstacles, but as invitations to explore. It’s about growth, adaptability, and courage.

It’s not the easy option. But for me, it’s been the most rewarding. It has allowed me to build a career that truly aligns with my values, helps others, and brings me joy.

My First Big Career Crossroad: Redundancy at 22

At 22, I landed a place on a highly competitive Graduate Management Scheme. Over 40,000 applicants, just 100 spots—and I got one. It felt like all my hard work had paid off, and I was set for life.

Then, just 12 months in, I was made redundant.

I was devastated. I had fought hard for this opportunity, and suddenly, it was gone. I was terrified—what would I do now? Would I have to return my very fancy, brand-new Vauxhall Tigra to the garage? Would I be destitute? (These were real worries!)

For a few weeks, I panicked. But after the tears of frustration and terror, I pivoted. Within four weeks, I landed a new role—one where I excelled. And, as it turns out, one where I met my future husband. Serendipity at its finest.

Looking back, that redundancy was a defining moment. It taught me courage - the courage to walk away from something that wasn’t working and trust that I’d find something better. Because there’s always a solution.

The Upside of a Squiggly Career

Every twist and turn in my career has shaped who I am today. I’ve worked in corporate leadership, talent management, coaching, education, recruitment, and floristry. Every pivot has added new skills, perspectives, and experiences, all of which I now bring into my work as a career and life coach for women.

Here’s what my squiggly career has taught me -

  1. Courage is everything.

That redundancy could have shattered my confidence. Instead, it taught me to trust myself and take action, even when I felt uncertain.

  2. Adaptability is your superpower.

Change is inevitable. The more adaptable you are, the more opportunities open up to you. My career has evolved because I’ve been willing to learn, grow, and embrace change.

  3. Passion leads to purpose.

Every time I’ve found myself at a crossroad, I’ve followed what felt right. That’s how I ended up as a career and life coach for women, supporting others as they navigate their own twists and turns.

  4. You don’t have to have it all figured out.

Careers don’t come with a perfect roadmap. It’s okay to take detours, try new things, and change direction; it’s all part of the journey.

  5. Work should align with your values.

I believe in helping people thrive, whether that’s in their careers, wellbeing, or personal growth. That’s why I do what I do now - helping women who feel stuck at a crossroads find clarity, confidence, and a career they love.

The Challenges of a Squiggly Career

Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing. A squiggly career means -

  • Uncertainty – There’s no set path, so you have to create your own opportunities.

  • Courageous decisions – You’ll need to take risks and trust your instincts.

  • Explaining your career moves – Some employers and recruiters love a traditional career ladder. You need to be able to sell your story and show how your experiences connect.

For me, these challenges have been worth it. The freedom, fulfilment, and sense of purpose I have now far outweigh the moments of uncertainty.

Why I Love My Career Now

Right now, I run a coaching business focused on women at pivotal moments in their careers, whether they’re facing redundancy, career change, burnout, or a feeling of being “stuck.” I also mentor in workplace wellbeing, helping individuals and organisations create environments where people can flourish.

I use my own career twists and turns to help others navigate theirs. I know what it’s like to feel lost, to be forced into a change you didn’t expect, and to wonder what’s next. And I also know that there’s always a way forward; sometimes, you just need a little support to find it.

Is a Squiggly Career Right for You?

If you feel stuck, uninspired, or unsure about what’s next, maybe a career pivot is exactly what you need. Maybe you’re clinging to a job that no longer fits because it feels “safe.” Or maybe you know you need change, but fear is holding you back.

That’s where I come in. As a coach in Wiltshire, I help women take action - whether that’s a complete career change, building confidence in their current role, or making small shifts that lead to big impact.

Your career doesn’t have to follow a straight line. Sometimes, the biggest opportunities come from the most unexpected twists. And sometimes, getting made redundant is the best thing that ever happens to you.

Feeling Stuck? Let’s Talk.

If you’re at a career crossroads and need support, I’d love to help. Whether you’re considering a career change, battling imposter syndrome, or figuring out what’s next, coaching can give you the clarity and confidence to move forward.
